This is a personal project.
I tried for the first time to create a 3D Head likeness and I chose the famous actress Emma Watson as a reference.
I used various images, from movies but also from different events.
I wanted to create a 3D model that could work in a game and could be animated properly.
The final output will be in UE4.
Modelling & Texturing
Head
The head consists of 3672 polys.
For the Head modelling and texturing I have watched some video tutorials from Laura Gallagher (Outgang) and J Hill.
I used:
-Zbrush for sculpting, and I exported height detailed maps (wrinkles, skin details, moles etc).
-Blender for creating the low poly model with the appropriate edge flow.
-Substance Painter for texturing.
I imported the height detailed maps from Zbrush, and used them to give colour, roughness, and specular variation.
Then I exported all the necessary maps.
Eyebrows
I have tried a couple of different ways to depict the eyebrow, but the one that I liked most was to duplicate the polygons from that area, create a separate UV, and draw the Eyebrow in the Fibershop software. When I was happy with the final result, I exported all the necessary maps.
Eye Lashes and Hairs
I decided to create Hair Cards, as I believe that is the most common way to model hair for a playable character.
I used the Hair tool addon by Bartosz Styperek (Blender), to create Hair Cards. For the textures, I used again the Fiber Shop.
Unreal Engine 4
Materials
Skin
For the skin, I used and edit the default skin material, from the Digital Human file (Mike) of UE4.
Hairs and Eyebrows
I followed the guides of the UE4 documentation and the Youtube tutorial of Psynema, in order to create a hair shader.
EyeLashes
For the Eyelashes, I have followed the Eyebrow diagram of the Aragon Character Aurora.
Eyes
For the Eyes, Tear Lines, Caruncles, and Eye Occlusion I used the default materials from the digital human file, from the UE4.
Rendering
For the rendering, I used the default scene of the Digital Human and I created a sequence following the guides of the UE4 documentation.
